The Future Is Circular: circular economy

Rauch/Holz® embodies the principles of the circular economy, promoting sustainability, resource efficiency, and environmental consciousness,

But what exactly is the circular economy?

What is circular economy?

A circular economy is a model of production and consumption focused on sharing, reusing, repairing, and recycling materials and products to extend their life cycle, thereby creating further value. Unlike the traditional linear model of 'take-make-consume-throw away,' which relies on large quantities of cheap, easily accessible materials and energy, the circular economy aims to keep products and materials in use for as long as possible, minimizing waste and resource consumption. It is based on three main principles: eliminating waste and pollution, circulating products and materials, and regenerating nature. The goal is to extract as much use from an item as possible. This approach helps optimize resource use, reduce raw material consumption, and recover waste, offering a solution to global environmental challenges.

The role of the circular economy in the construction industry

While the concept of a circular economy is relatively new, it has already made an impact in the construction industry which is one of the world’s largest consumers of energy and raw materials.

A circular economy seeks to use materials to the fullest. In the construction industry, that means trying to reuse or repurpose materials as much as possible.

New Trends

The focus on sustainability has shifted to higher-end materials that last longer than standard building materials. Consumers want products that align with their values, and construction oriented towards a circular economy aligns with their environmental awareness. Home buyers want a house built to last. That means materials must be of higher quality. The push for higher-quality building materials plays into the concept of a circular economy because homes that use better-quality products will last longer and need replacement less often.
