FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS /
Rauch/Holz® is wood that undergoes a very careful carbonization process resulting in a deeply black surface. The wood, thanks to the fire treatment, becomes extremely durable: weather, water, fire and rot resistant. (And very pretty)
Our wood is responsibly sourced only from local forests in northern Germany. We use Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) for its excellent strength properties, workability, and good stability. Read more...
Like any other wood, Rauch/Holz® will age and weather over time when exposed to the elements. Its structure and color can change depending on the position, environmental conditions and/or mechanical influences. Rauch/Holz® ages with dignity. If well-maintained, it will retain its color and properties for a longer time.
No, each Rauch/Holz® plank is carefully burnt and treated with a water-based emulsion that prevents staining and wear.
Only if you crave for an exceptional space. Our Flama and Fina are specially made for interiors.
There is no difference in the installation of Rauch/Holz® compared to untreated wood boards. Facade boards can be installed horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. For mounting the wood, we advise using stainless steel screws with black heads, which we can supply. We are happy to offer guidance on the assembly.
We can provide a variety of profiles and dimensions, including:
Widths: 100 mm to 240 mm
Lengths: 2.5 m to 6.0 m
Wood thickness: 24 mm (standard)
Additionally, we offer tongue and groove profiles as well as other planed profiles, which can be custom-made according to your requirements. We are happy to discuss specific needs with you to create the perfect product. Based on experience, you should account for approximately 5% waste when placing your order.
Only our brushed product, Rauch/Holz® Flama, is suitable for flooring or seating. For the other products, continuous walking will deteriorate the carbon layer.
No — we offer four variants.
Klassik, Kaiman, and Fina are deeply black, while Flama features a striking, naturally contrasted surface if black isn’t your thing.
“Colored surfaces” you may see elsewhere are often achieved with paints or chemical treatments — something we deliberately avoid.
We guarantee you a product that is individually produced with the utmost care and expertise. All Rauch/Holz® products are natural products and will change over the course of their long life, depending on the location and the manner of installation. With proper installation, we offer a 1-year warranty on the sealed surfaces.
8 to 10 weeks following the first payment.
No, we definitely did not.
This façade is an industrial imitation of “Yakisugi” — a clear example of how the technique can be misused. This is not Wabi-Sabi, the beauty of imperfection — it’s simply a very poorly executed job.
Unfortunately, examples like this make architects and homeowners skeptical about carbonized wood.
A carbonized wood façade will naturally weather over time, but when the burning and coating are done correctly, using the right wood, the result lasts much — really much — longer, with all its benefits.
